The Birth Of E-Commerce

The Birth of E-commerce

Trading, selling, bartering – commerce has been around since we invited the wheel, but you can’t deny that it has changed dramatically since. Its no surprise how quickly traditional buying and selling was transported to the internet, with the E-commerce industry becoming a $1.9 TRILLION industry. Can you guess what the first online product was to sell?
Marijuana! In the early 1970’s, students from Stanford used an early packet switching network called Arpanet, the first network to implement the protocol suite TCP/IP. The accounts engaged in the transaction were to neighbouring students at MIT. Pretty nifty huh? They used this technique for convenience and a somewhat more low-key trade.
In 1994, the first ever internet purchase was a large pizza from Pizza Hut. And 20 years later, in 2014, Pizza Hut celebrated this transaction by discounting 50% off all medium and large pizza sold online.
Again in 1994, we see the first E-commerce pioneer, an individual purchasing a Sting CD, as it was the first ever secure online purchase. The CD was sold by US retail platform NetMarket. And the rest is history, with commerce still changing today.
