Hunter Street Mall runs between Perkins and Newcomen Streets in the heart of Newcastle. In contrast to today’s massive suburban shopping centres, the Mall (along with nearby Darby Street) provides prospective shoppers with a unique shopping experience. Shopping in the Mall comes with the enjoyable experience of moving shop to shop in fresh air rather than air-conditioning, shielded from the sun by the dappled canopies of the trees of that line this thoroughfare.

The Mall is undergoing a period of positive urban renewal and is now a bustling thoroughfare where once there were empty shops, now an ever increasing number of boutiques, cafes and galleries to tempt you to browse, chat, eat, and shop.

A summary of major projects by Newcastle City Council shows 17 developments worth a total $358 million, with seven projects in the CBD’s main trade thoroughfare valued at $121 million.

They include the new law courts complex ($90 million), the McCloy Group’s Lucky Country development ($6 million) and the Star Hotel refurbishment ($5.5 million).

The summary said the CBD was undergoing a “significant period” of change following the release of the state government’s Newcastle Urban Renewal Strategy, adding that the council’s Hunter Street revitalisation strategy is also underpinning change.
