A Business Activity Statement (BAS) is a report lodged with the ATO (usually quarterly) that outlines:
– Goods and Services Tax (GST) collected and paid
– PAYG withholding (if you employ staff)
– PAYG instalments (if required)
– Other tax obligations (e.g. fuel tax credits, fringe benefits tax)
You must register for GST if:
– Your business earns $75,000 or more in turnover per year
– You drive a taxi, rideshare or limousine (any income level)
– You want to claim GST credits on business expenses
Not sure if you’re close to the threshold? We can help you track and plan for it.
– Not registering for GST when required
– Claiming GST on purchases that don’t include GST
– Including personal expenses in business deductions
– Missing quarterly deadlines
– Not reconciling with accounting software or bank feeds
– Under-reporting sales from cash jobs or split payments
Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks make it easier to track GST, issue compliant invoices, and lodge BAS electronically. We can help you get set up or review your current system.
Always keep business and personal finances separate. It keeps your records clean and reduces the chance of claiming ineligible expenses.
A common rule of thumb is to set aside:
– 10–15% for tax
– 10% for GST This helps avoid bill shock when your BAS is due.
Keep digital records of all business expenses. If you’re ever audited by the ATO, this is your first line of defence.
Quarterly BAS deadlines are:
– Q1: 28 October
– Q2: 28 February
– Q3: 28 April
– Q4: 28 July
We’ll handle it for you — or review your figures before submission if you DIY.
We support Maitland businesses with:
– BAS preparation and lodgement
– Quarterly reviews and reconciliations
– GST registration and advice
– Xero & MYOB setup and support
– Ongoing bookkeeping packages
As a business grows, so does its tax complexity. That’s where we come in. Whether you’re just hitting the GST threshold or scaling up your team, we’ll help you stay compliant — and confident.
The ATO doesn’t accept “I didn’t know” — but we do. Let’s clean up your books, streamline your BAS process, and give you peace of mind every quarter.
