Port Stephens oysters ‘no food risk’ after Williamtown contamination: NSW Chief Scientist
TESTING on Port Stephens oysters has indicated that they pose no food safety risk, according to the office of the NSW Chief Scientist.
Fishing and oyster harvest bans have been in place around the Tilligerry Peninsula for nearly a month after toxic perfluoro-octane sulfonate and perfluoro-octanoic acid, from a fire-fighting foam previously used at the Williamtown RAAF Base, leaked into nearby ground and surface water.
The state government established an expert panel to oversee the response to the contamination overseen by the state’s Chief Scientist Mary O’Kane.
And while a spokesman from the Chief Scientist’s office emphasised that a decision on whether the fishing and oyster bans can be lifted will not be made until Friday, test results on oysters have been positive.
He said the panel would likely meet with industry representatives in the coming days before a decision was made.
