Tax Averaging Hints and Tips

Tax averaging is a technique used by primary producers to even out their income and taxes that are payable over a period of five years. As a result, they stay without paying more taxes for a few years than people with similar but stable incomes.

How tax averaging work
It depends on the amount of your basic taxable income. This is taxable income less:
• Total capital gains,
• A select of superannuation lump sums,
• Death benefit termination payments
• A higher than average income of a special professional.

When average income is lower than the basic taxable income, tax averaging is received to offset the difference. On the other hand, if your average income is higher than your basic taxable income; more income tax is paid on the averaging element of your basic taxable income. Comparison rate of the current tax year as well as gross averaging amount and averaging component are considered during computations.
