The ATO has advised that, in early October, it began contacting more than 500,00 taxpayers to let them know that their recently submitted tax return are “shipshape”, and will not be subject to further review.
The project is aimed at taxpayers with straightforward affairs and taxable incomes under $180,000
The ATO says that they want to give certainty to taxpayers who do the right thing.
Assistant Commissioner Adam Kendrick said that some taxpayers worry unnecessarily that they might be subject to further review later on.
“People who receive a certainty letter can be assured that we are happy with their tax return, and have closed our books permanently on their return, providing there’s no evidence of fraud or deliberate avoidance.”
“Being a pilot program, not everyone will receive a letter. Depending on the success of this pilot, we aim to expand this program to more taxpayers for tax time 2016,” Mr Kendrick said.
