You may have heard numerous cases of successful and well-off individuals setting up a SMSF, taking charge of their investments, running the fund for the sole purpose of providing retirement benefits for the members and their dependants. A SMSF has its Tax File Number (TFN), Australian Business Number (ABN) and transactional bank account, which allows them to receive contributions and rollovers, make investments and pay out pensions.

What’s stopping you from doing the same? Concerned that you will have sole responsibility for the investment decisions for the fund? Or maybe you’re not so sure about complying with the multitude of super and tax laws. Don’t let this put you off, under our licensee Interprac, Bottrell Wealth are accredited SMSF service providers, and can help in the establishment, administration and strategies associated in setting up.

Essentially, a company is acting as trustee for the fund. Each member of the fund must be a director of the company, and each director of the corporate trustee must be a member of the fund (except for single-member funds).

Each member of this structure is appointed as a trustee, with a minimum of two trustees required. Each member of the fund must be a trustee, and each trustee must be a member of the fund (except for single-member funds) .

MySuper funds have a certain level of death, disability and income protection insurance that you will be automatically covered for. If you wish to received insurance through a third party, you will need to tell your super fund that you do want to be covered via their services.

However, insurance is often cheaper through super, although the default cover available may not cover you for the events and circumstances you require. It is wise to review your insurance policy with your super fund, and address alternative options.
