Don’t issue an on-the-spot refund before you check
The ATO has warned practitioners about the dangers of issuing on-the-spot refunds before the ATO has issued the client’s notice of assessment. It says that practitioners may require information about debts their clients might have with other departments, such as Child Support. If clients do have debts with other government departments, they may not receive their full refund from the ATO. Although registered tax agents can represent their clients in matters with the ATO, and can access or update information the ATO holds on their client’s accounts, practitioners will need to take separate action to become an authorised contact for their clients with other government departments.
The ATO is therefore advising practitioners to:
- obtain information from their client about debts with other departments; or
- become an authorised contact for their client with that department, so they can contact it on their client’s behalf.
