Getting started your tax file number
Before you start work, or soon after, you may need to get a tax file number (TFN). You can apply for a TFN from us or from the Department of Human Services. You don’t have to have a TFN, but you pay more tax if you don’t have one.
A tax file number is an important part of the Australian tax system. We only issue one TFN to you during your lifetime, even if you change things such as your name or residency
