Is our economy generating enough work?
Full time jobs have increased by less than 40,000 between 2011 and 2013, while part time jobs increased by nearly 160,000. Unemployment is at 5.7 percent (which doesn’t even compare to the jobless rate of 12 percent in Europe and 7 percent in the United States). There appears to be a lack of new full time positions of at least 35hours a week being created at the moment, as the economy is not creating enough full time work to keep up with the growth in the population, it is leading to underemployment. The experts say so few full time positions appearing is a sign of a weak economy, as it suggests employers lack confidence to hire people in permanent roles. Employers also appear to be increasing the overall number of hours worked by their existing staff rather than bringing new people on.
