NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON’T

Technology isn’t going anywhere. It is here to stay and is on the rise. Unfortunately as our digital force increases, we see more industries on the chopping block.

A recent article in the New Daily states that each year in Australia we lose over 200, 000 jobs each year and we are set to lose $4 million jobs by 2024. As we lose jobs due to technology taking over, we do gain more and create new jobs to match – but the scary thing may be the depletion of the lower skilled jobs that the working class Australian depends on.

Some of the main industries on the chopping block include:

  • Car manufacturing – think the recent Australian manufacturing closures.
  • Sales assistants and cashiers – think self-serve checkouts.
  • Bank tellers – when is the last time you went into a bank?
  • Librarian – think kindles and online book stores
  • Print journalists – as sad as it is, print is slowly disappearing
  • Postmen – think the reduction in our post service already and the increase in postage fees to compensate.

It is sad to consider the number of workers we take for granted that will gradually be replaced by technology. Unfortunately, the one thing technology cannot provide is a smile, excellent customer service, a chat as you check out your items… there are some things that money just can’t buy.
