Payroll Tax
Payroll tax is a state tax on the wages you pay to employees. It’s calculated on the amount of wages you pay per month. You need to pay payroll tax if your total Australian wages exceed the exemption threshold in your relevant state or territory – which varies between states and territories.
If you employ staff nationally (across multiple states) you often will need to
– Lodge Payroll Tax returns in each state (that employees are employed)
– Disclose your total Australian wide wages
– Only be entitled to a percentage of the exemption threshold based on the wages (that are applicable to that particular state) as a portion of total Australian wide wages
