Tax scheme promoter sentenced
In the latest successful case brought under Project Wickenby, a Brisbane man has been sentenced to 6 years jail for promoting a tax avoidance scheme to a number of clients which led to a total of $1,392,696 in tax being avoided. Mr Ewan Stoddart, 48, was sentenced on 13 counts of aiding & abetting the commission of fraud against the Commonwealth, each count carrying a sentence of 6 years imprisonment. It was ordered that all sentences be served concurrently. In sentencing Mr Stoddart, Judge Long S.C. commented: “These offences are of a kind that are serious in nature, as they affect the integrity of the Australian taxation system, thus directly impact on the Australian community. This is particularly so given your position of responsibility and trust in the community…” Evidence presented to the Brisbane District Court revealed Ewan Stoddart promoted tax avoidance schemes to a number of his clients as he worked as an accountant on the Gold Coast. Four of Mr Stoddart’s clients have been convicted of obtaining financial advantages by deception in connection with the tax schemes.
