Student Debt Dogs Women Longer
Student debt is harder for women to pay off than it is for men, according to research from the American Association of University Women. And the situation is even worse for black and Hispanic women, who earn less than other groups and struggle to get rid of study debt, Bloomber reports.
While in the past two decades in the US women have become more likely to enrol in college than men, earned higher grades, and finished more frequently than their male peers, highly educated women continue to earn less over time.
On average, women who graduated in 2008 paid back 33% of their student loans by 2012, according to AAUW’s analysis of Department of Education data. Men repaid 44% of their debt in that period.
