THE FACEBOOK ALGORITHM – THE EVER CHANGING BEAST
Facebook is a huge and wondrous beast. One day you think you have the hang of it and boom! Those clever facebook IT experts have gone and changed the way they do business and we are back to learning the ropes again.
Which is why facebook has over 1.13 billion daily active users (as of June 2016) and employs over 14 000 people! (Facebook Newsroom) Huge huh?
As of March 2016, three million advertisers advertise on Facebook with 70% of those outside the US. There is a very valid reason why Facebook maintains its position as one of the most powerful forces in today’s digital landscape.
They know what they are doing.
There is a team of dedicated Facebook IT experts ( as well will call them), whose job it is to analyse the way we use facebook, how we interact with our friends, the community, businesses we like and those new to us. They analyse how we respond to news articles, images, videos and a whole range of viral content. They analyse what we do with content – do we read and like, like before we read, share before we read… the list is endless!
From this host of information, facebook manipulate the algorithm they use which determines what we see in our news feed. You will notice as they try out new things and implement new changes as they test new strategies and approaches.
One thing is for certain, with facebook looking like they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, they will continue to research, test, trial and change their algorithms to ensure facebook stays ahead of the game.
And our job is to try and keep up.
