WHICH GENERATION IS BEST FOR YOU?

A Boomer, an X or a Y?

 

The Boomers, the Lost Generation and the Millennials. Chances are you have at least one of each amongst your employees. Each has their trademark personality traits, downfalls and work ethics. However, if you learn to embrace the diversification that comes with a workforce of varying ages, you can reap the benefits that come from embracing all workers – both young and old.

 

So what to expect from a Gen Y vs a Baby Boomer – we’ve broken them down for you.

 

The Baby Boomer (1946 – 1964)

Generally most baby boomers are nearing the age of retirement so your numbers may be fewer as the years go on.

Characteristics: Hardworking, loyal, hesitant to learn new technologies and skills.

The final say: The baby boomer generation have a lot of wisdom and experience that should be valued and held on to. The younger generations can benefit from witnessing boomer loyalty and dedication to hard work.

Generation X (born between 1965 – 1981)

Dubbed the slacker generation, Gen X take a hard rap for not achieving great things like their boomer predecessors and the Millennials who are hot at their feet.

Characteristics: Independent, value a good work-life balance, chase flexibility in working environment.

The final say: Occupying the largest component of our workforce, Gen-Xers are crucial for stepping into the shoes of our retiring boomer generation.

Gen Y (born between 1982 – 2000)

Gen Y (also known as Millennials) were born into a very technologically enhanced world, so communicating via technology is second nature.

Characteristics: Highly technologically proficient, demand immediate gratification, self-entitled and achievement oriented.

The final say: This generation will no doubt be responsible for some huge innovations however must ensure that it doesn’t come at the expense of human interaction and modesty.

Workers from all generations have something unique to offer. A diversified workforce including members from all generations can bring together a wealth of talent and skills. So assess your staff on their skills and what they can bring – regardless of the year they were born.
