Gender gap
Gender gap
An unusual idea has emerged for women wanting to sell new products on eBay – pretend to be a man.
The Guardian reports on a study that found men earn 20% more on average than women selling identical new products on eBay. It seems that both men and women tend to offer less for items when the seller is a woman. Researcher Tamar Kricheli-Katz, a sociologist at Tel Aviv University, says while a gap in selling prices was expected, researchers were surprised at the magnitude.
as for what to do about it, the researchers don”t actually recommend women pose as men when selling items. Rather, they suggest buyers look for women sellers and buy from them, saying the prices will be better, and at the same time more bidding on the women’s products will help to narrow the gap. But ideally, pay the women the same price as male vendors.
